NetworkMods is a Cambridge-based computing and technology support service. They came to Opta Design to design their new @home service for residents in the Cambridge and Newmarket areas who need reliable and friendly computer support. We designed their new @home marque using hand drawn type, tweaked and refined their existing NetworksMods logotype, designed and built their new website.

The website responds to various device screen widths using media queries to style the content across desktops, tablets and smart phones, delivering a quality experience to users no matter how large (or small) the device browser. The site is powered by Perch content management system (CMS), the perfect CMS for a site of this size and functionality.

Director and screen writer Carl Harber asked Opta Design to put together a quick promotional Typepad blog and poster design for his Czech film The Wrong Mr Johnson. Set in Prague, The Wrong Mr Johnson is a sweet comedy of errors about mistaken identity. It looks and feels so much more than the shoestring budget afforded, with some tender performances from some of the Czech Republic’s biggest film stars.

‘It’s a movie that still believes in dreams coming true, but has no illusions about how easy it is to make that happen’, says Carl. With the line up of talent he managed to get on board, it seems dreams really can come true. Watch the trailer on Vimeo.

Opta Design were commissioned to design some information boards for the Common Room areas for The Market Hostel in the centre of Cambridge for King’s College.

Feedback from Dr. Patricia McGuire, the Archivist at King’s College was extremely positive: ‘The furnishings officer and clerk of works have just seen the boards, and declared themselves pleased. The boards were deemed very attractive...work well with the light-greenish paint in the Market Hostel rooms where the panels will hang’.

Opta Design were commissioned to design a series of display panels for the Jock Colville Hall, Churchill College outlining some of the ephemera held at the Churchill Archives Centre.

It’s always great to get positive feedback from clients. The Centre’s Director Allen Packwood was most complimentary: ‘Opta Design instantly took onboard the dynamics of the exhibition we wanted to create and came up with fantastic layouts to schedule. To paraphrase Churchill, I am sure that this is just the end of the beginning of a great working relationship.’

As a leading centre of research, the University of Cambridge is at the centre of the ‘Silicon Fen’ network, and is adept at spinning out new companies developing new technologies into profitable products and services. These fledgling companies come to Opta Design to give them an identity and to produce their first websites, marketing communications and business stationery. We call this service The Art of the Start. It seems an appropriate moniker for these new enterprises – getting off to a good start means you’re more likely to make a successful exit – as a well considered and appropriate identity in print and digital forms, is more likely to attract the right team members at the outset (and ultimately customers), driving the business forward.

As a small two-man design agency, we like working closely with founders. They tend to be driven, focused and eager to get their ideas out into the market. Getting their businesses looking good from the outset is a sound investment. As these companies grow and take on marketing and sales staff, we are asked to produce brochures, micro-sites, exhibition materials, ads etc. that reflect and reinforce their identity.

At the heart of designing for technology companies we take into account that a flexible system that can adapt and change is vital. For example, we designed the identity, first website iterations and marketing communications for data quality software developer Datanomic. They have been acquired by Oracle. ‘Opta’s expertise and valuable experience ensured our new identity was launched on time and within budget. Opta Design is pro-active in its approach, organised and fast to respond at all times’.

We designed the identity, website and business stationery for Cogent Environmental – a provider of state-of-the-art environmental and process monitoring products, technologies and services. They have been acquired by Modern Water; also the identity website and technical information for Zynetix, specialists in GSM solutions. They were acquired by Globe Wireless. Other start-ups that Opta Design has undertaken design work for include Neuropharm, Ranier Technology, Accipia, Quotient Associates, ip.access and ShoZu.

He’s brought with him a few mock-up boxes that another creative agency had developed. They weren’t quite hitting the mark. The typography was un-structured and not well-crafted, making for a layout that was confusing and didn’t lead the potential customer into the product. Our recommendation? Start again, beginning with re-writing the copy (cutting it significantly) so that it wasn’t so technical and focused on specific goals: the end destination a user of the software could expect to reach. As emotion is more memorable than stats, we suggested hooking potential buyers on a feeling, and then backing that up with a great product experience.

Well written copy, typeset with care, also needs great imagery to reflect and reinforce a great story, so we set about sourcing a selection of images that the tight budget afforded. Initially there were four different products in the Accountz range so we chose a selection that fit well together on a shelf, and began to iterate box designs using our new style that was clean, easy-to-understand, that well... just worked better. At the same time we started work on the associated materials that came in the boxes: the CD-ROM design, user manual and marketing/promotional pieces such as display stands and banners used at conferences.

Our work then branched out into the digital realm with website banner ads, writing copy and designing a suite of ads in different sizes and orientations. Click-through rates for these ads exceeded expectations. It’s our experience that banner ads have to work really hard, and so our clean, simple design aesthetic helped them stand out on even the most cluttered of websites. And the positive feedback extends all the way to reviews of the software itself; MacWorld and MacUser magazines has given Accountz glowing reviews, including MacUser’s coveted Editor’s Choice award (out of 16 contenders).

Their existing identity wasn’t working hard enough to appeal to airline management in need of their specialist services, so Opta Design was commissioned to redesign their logotype, and create a simple brochure website outlining their capabilities.

The logotype was developed in conjunction with the website to produce a clean, professional experience that’s impacting and reflects the aviation theme, along with business cards and business stationery. It work both reversed out of the corporate blue and on a letterhead and other marketing communications.

Since the redesign, business has really taken off and the Google stats show continued traffic from all parts of the world, proving that a well written and well designed and coded, standards compliant website – even if it’s only a four page site – can drive new business to any organisation.
