About us

OptaDesign was established in 1997 by business partners Malcolm Forbes and Rob Sawkins.

Malcolm and Rob met at Cambridge University Press in the early nineties. Rob, as in-house designer, worked closely with Malcolm (freelance designer, formerly with the University Press) on several projects and it soon became clear they shared an understanding of good design, appropriate typography and solving challenging issues.

After much discussion and careful planning the Opta partnership was formed, and began trading from attic studios in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Today, after having had studios in Cambridge and London, Opta operate from studios in Cambridge, UK and Prague, CZ.

Opta’s approach is to produce quality work as standard – with experienced understanding of image-use and typography, process and production media. Rob and Malcolm do not employ other staff and handle all client briefs and design work themselves – ensuring commitment, consistency and client confidence.

‘A consultancy which often seems capable of consistently generating inspired work. Perhaps more importantly, they are also willing to persevere and work hard to achieve perfect results for their client.’

‘Datanomic worked closely with OptaDesign to design, develop and launch its new corporate identity. OptaDesign interpreted the brief very well and their expertise and valuable experience ensured the identity was launched on time and within budget. OptaDesign is pro-active in its approach, organised and fast to respond at all times.’
